Trains

The main service between Bournemouth and Poole is operated by South West Trains and London can be reached in just 1 hour and 50 minutes from Bournemouth. The line also serves Southampton, Winchester and Basingstoke to the east and Wareham, Dorchester and Weymouth to the west.

Direct trains can also be taken to Oxford, Reading, Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Manchester with CrossCountry trains, and of course most of the UK can be reached by changing at other stations.

Getting between Bournemouth and Poole by train is easy with both Bournemouth railway station and Poole railway station being conveniently located near the town centre’s.
There are also stations at Branksome, Parkstone and Hamworthy in Poole, before reaching the stations at Holton Heath and Wareham. Heading in the other direction you will find Pokesdown station, which serves Boscombe, and further on Christchurch station.

The New Forest is just on our doorstep and after Christchurch the train line heads through the New Forest with stations at New Milton, Sway, Brockenhurst and Ashurst. And if you’re heading off on a cruise from Southampton or flying out of Southampton airport then you’ll be pleased to know that the train also stops there.

South West trains offer 4 types of tickets – Anytime, Off Peak, Super Off Peak and Advance. Season tickets and railcards are also available.

If you plan to use a bus after getting off your train then consider ‘PlusBus’ which adds bus travel to your rail ticket saving you time and money on buying a separate bus ticket for your journey. It then gives you unlimited bus travel around your chosen town, on participating buses. You can buy these from any station ticket office, from all South West Trains ticket machines, by phone and online.

Bournemouth train station is also known as the Bournemouth Travel Interchange, the main hub for all trains, coaches and buses feeding into Bournemouth. The station is located approximately 1.2 miles from Bournemouth town centre, or roughly a 20 minute walk.

Of course if you don’t fancy walking then there is a taxi rank and of course with it being the travel interchange numerous buses stop here.

More buses from Wilts and Dorset have a number of routes stopping here.
The M1 bus will take you into Bournemouth town centre and then goes onto Poole. Heading the other way it will take you to Charminster.
The number 13 route from here goes to Ferndown, Wimborne and finally onto Merley. This bus will also take you into the town centre of Bournemouth.
The number 32 also goes to Bournemouth town centre one way and to Winton, Kinson, Canford Magna, Merley, Oakdale and Poole bus station the other way.
Finally the number 50 bus, or Purbeck Breezer, will take you from the station into Bournemouth town centre before heading to Sandbanks and onto the chain ferry over to Studland and then onto Swanage.
On Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights the N1 bus will take you to Bournemouth town centre and then onto Poole, or to Southbourne and Charminster if travelling the other way. The N3 bus will take you to Bournemouth University. Full details of More buses’ routes can be obtained from the More Bus website where you can also book your tickets in advance.

In addition to the More buses, Yellow buses also serve Bournemouth train station.
To get to Bournemouth town centre use routes 3, 4a, 4b, 4c, 4d, 5a, 5b, 6 and 18. If travelling on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday night the N6 route will take you to either the town centre or Bournemouth University.
And just a few minutes walk away on Holdenhurst Road is the stop for Routes 2b and 2c which will take you to Boscombe bus station and Pokesdown train station.

Poole train station is located just a 10 minute walk from the town centre and the bus station. Heading the other way Poole Quay is also just a 10 minute walk with the Poole ferry terminal being about a 20 minute walk. But if you don’t fancy walking the Route One bus stops outside the train station and will take you to the bus station and the quay. It runs every 15 minutes during the daytime, Monday to Saturday (less frequently before 10.00am and after 3.00pm). First bus of the day from Poole train station is at 7.36am, last bus is at 6.08pm. A single journey costs 70p or hop on, hop off as many times as you like in a day for £1.40. Children aged 7 to under 19, hop on hop off for 50p or 30p for a single journey, under 7’s go free when accompanied by an adult.*

The X1 and X2 More buses will take you to Christchurch town centre and Bournemouth town centre however the stops for these are on Bargates, just up from the station. The 1b and 1c buses from Yellow buses stop outside the station and will also take you to Christchurch town centre and Bournemouth town centre as well as Bournemouth train station (travel interchange) and Poole bus station.

If you prefer walking it is approximately 0.6 miles to Christchurch town centre and just under a mile to the quay.

Pokesdown is an inaccessible station to wheelchair users and customers are advised to use Bournemouth station.

Bus routes to Bournemouth town centre are the M2 from More buses and routes 1a, 1b, 1c, 2a, 2b and 2c from Yellow buses. These buses will also take you to Boscombe bus station. Buses 2a, 2b and 2c also go to Bournemouth train station (travel interchange) whilst the M2, 1b and 1c also go to Poole bus station.

Boscombe town centre is just over half a mile away and Boscombe pier is approximately a 15 minute walk.

Branksome Station in Poole is actually closer to Bournemouth town centre than Poole with Bournemouth about 2 miles away whilst Poole is around 3 miles.
The station is conveniently located for the popular Westbourne area of Bournemouth which is about 1 mile away.
Bus routes M1 and M2 from More buses and routes 1b and 1c from Yellow buses stop on the main road just outside the station and all go to Bournemouth or Poole town centre’s.

Parkstone Train Station serves the Parkstone area of Poole, approximately 1.5 miles from Poole town centre.
There are no buses that run from this station, the nearest bus stops are on Bournemouth Road, close to the junction with Church Road. Route M1 from More buses and 1b from Yellow Buses will then take you either to Poole or Bournemouth.

Serving the Hamworthy area of Poole, this station is located approximately 2.8 miles from Poole town centre.
The nearest bus stop is on Turlin Road, about a 5 minute walk, and the number 8 and 9 routes from More buses will take you into the centre of Poole.

Holton Heath Station, Wareham, Dorset, BH16 6JT

This station serves the Holton Heath area of Wareham.
It is not staffed and a Permit to Travel machine is in operation. Please purchase a permit and exchange it for a ticket on train.
Please note that this station has limited Mobility/Accessibility access.
The nearest bus stop is about half a mile away outside the Sandford Holiday Park on Organford Road. The number 40 Purbeck Breezer bus from More buses will take you to Poole town centre, or to Swanage the other way.

Wareham Train Station, North Port, Wareham, BH20 4AS

The number 40 bus (Purbeck Breezer) operated by More buses stops outside Wareham Station and will take you to Poole bus station one way and Swanage the other way. It is about a half a mile walk to the centre of Wareham.
