Thomas Hardy, the English writer and Poet, was born in this cottage in 1840.
Built by Hardy’s great grandfather the walls were constructed from cob and the roof is beautifully thatched.
This delightful and secluded cottage is situated in Higher Bockhampton, near Dorchester and it was here that Hardy wrote some of his earlier novels including “Under the Greenwood Tree”
Outside the garden is typical of a traditional cottage garden with a selection of beautiful plants and shrubs.
Next to the cottage is Thorncombe Woods, an ancient woodland and nature reserve that opens out onto heathland and the beginning of Hardy’s Egdon Heath.
