Thank you to volunteers across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole during coronavirus crisis

Large numbers of vulnerable and isolated residents are being supported during the crisis thanks to the overwhelming response for local community volunteers to help in the Council’s Together We Can community response effort.

More than 1,250 vulnerable people who are self-isolating and who do not have friends and family close by to offer help are being supported through our army of local volunteers.


Since the launch of BCP Council’s Together We Can Volunteer Hub in March, more than 2,500 volunteers have registered to offer vital help and support to local vulnerable residents.

The volunteers are matched to local people who are in need to provide a range of support, from organising deliveries of food, prescriptions and essential household supplies as well as offering information and advice.

Councillor Vikki Slade, Leader of BCP Council, said: “I want to say a huge thank you to the large numbers of local residents who have stepped forward to offer up their time to help. We’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity of our local people who want to help in their local communities.

“Whether people have registered to volunteer through the Council’s volunteer hub, through the national NHS scheme, or through our local volunteering partners, your offers are very much valued and the level of response has been exceptional. We know some people have not been required to help out just yet, but be assured that as soon as an opportunity arises we will be in touch. We are also working closely with our volunteering partners, Community Action Network on ways that volunteers can help in the community in other ways.”

Jo, a GP receptionist from Poole, signed up to the Together We Can Volunteer Hub and was matched with elderly resident, Mary who needed help getting her shopping during lockdown.

Jo said: “I love helping people so when the opportunity came to volunteer for BCP council, I jumped at the chance. I want to be part of something and to feel I’ve made a difference to someone. I think the council did a fantastic job at matching Mary and I and it doesn’t surprise me to know we have a lot in common.

“I have no doubt that I’ll stay in contact with Mary way beyond the lockdown being lifted. There is no better feeling that to help someone that is struggling and in need of support, I recommend it to anyone, it’s great for the soul.”

Local resident, Mary who is self-isolating, said: “It’s very comforting to know I can get essentials like bread and milk and not have to get a big online order. Jo is very cheerful and makes me feel good, and I enjoy having her around. She does a damn good job.”
