A 17th Century Christmas – The Lord of Misrule Story Telling
Returning this Christmas for daytime tours is Corfe Castle’s very own Lord of Misrule. Far back in the mists of history, at the darkest time of the year the Lord of Misrule was chosen to oversee the fun and frivolity of the Christmas feast. Swapping places with the lord of the manor, they had complete power over all the guests in choosing the games, dances and other entertainments. This Christmas, take a step back to the 17th century where our very own lord of misrule will take you on an interactive journey through the ruins of the castle and teach you the games, dances, stories and Christmas traditions of days gone by.
Tours at -10:30, 11:30, 1pm, 2pm & 3pm.
4-5 December, 11-12 December, 18-23 December and 27-31 December.
This event is free but standard admission applies.
Twelve days of Christmas Family Quest:
Search for the shields hidden in the castle ruins and complete the activities of your Christmas castle quest.
When the Puritans gained control of the country in 1644, they were quick to pass laws to ban traditional Christmas celebrations, claiming they were sinful, immoral, and that many traditions were pagan and not Christian. Discover the changing Christmas traditions during this turbulent time and think about how the Bankes family of Corfe Castle, loyal royalists, might have defied Parliament and celebrated Christmas in 1645.
This event is free but standard admission applies.
Running for of all December
Marshmallows, Firepits and Festivities:
Take time to relax and enjoy a winter warmer in the seasonal setting of Corfe Castle. Gather around a fire pit with a warm drink from the 17th Century tea-room and toast some tasty Marshmallows. Listen out for sounds of Christmas and enjoy a medieval castle dressed for this festive time of year. Make a wish for the yuletide season on the wishing bridge located at the south west gate house.
4-5 December, 11-12 December, 18-23 December and 27-31 December.
